I’m sure you’ve heard before that the perfect cup of coffee starts with the perfect grind. Well, this is an absolute truth in the world of coffee because no matter how good the beans are, if they aren’t ground properly then your brew won’t be nearly as good as it could be. 1. What is a burr grinder?

Difference between blade grind consistency between best burr coffee grinders and best blade coffee grindersThere are 2 types of coffee grinders: blade and burr. Blade grinders use small sharp metal blades to slice up your beans whereas a burr grinder uses two abrasive surfaces called burrs to crush them. Basically the beans funnel through these burrs, are ground up, and then fall down a chute into the bottom chamber of the grinder. The main benefit of burr grinders is that they provide a significantly more consistent grind that blade grinders do, albeit at a higher price.  In our opinion, this larger initial investment is definitely worth it in the long run. Why spoil cups and cups worth of great beans by butchering them with blades? Surely your beloved beans deserve better!

2. Different types of burr grinders

There are two types of burr grinders: conical and flat. The difference simply relates to the abrasive surfaces that grind the beans – one is conical, and the other, you guessed it, flat.

Shape comparison between the best burr conical and flat coffee grindersAs you can see, both use two serrated surfaces that move in opposite directions to grind up the beans with the difference being the shapes of the surfaces. It’s important to note that the differences in shapes really isn’t too important – both will give you a good consistent grind. However, due to their design, conical grinders are easier to clean and have less waste because more of the ground up beans will filter through into the bottom chamber. Conical grinders also run at lower RPMs and therefore produce less heat and noise. Flat grinders on the other hand are thought to yield a more consistent grind and allow for more creativity when making espresso grinds althought they are significantly pricier.

But again, the flat vs conical decision isn’t too important as the differences above are negligible in the bigger scheme of things. As long as you’re getting a quality burr grinder that is used properly and well maintained, you’ll be good to go.

3. What to consider when looking for the best burr coffee grinders

My First Experience

Sourcing one of the best burr coffee grinders is easier than one thinks. I remember buying my first burr grinder. I’d heard over and over again that a really good grinder makes a world of difference to your coffee. This, along with the fact that I would have much more hands-in approach to preparing my coffee, had me super enthusiastic. With the excitement of a child on Christmas morning, I took to my beloved Google to find out what the best burr coffee grinders were. As soon as my search loaded, I was hit with a wall of information – where do I even begin?! There were different types of grinders and so many different models within these different types, all at different price points and with different features.

This overload of information led to instant deflation and I felt like I was way in over my head. After hounding through countless blogs and product pages, I eventually decided that this overload of informatio isn’t going to help and that I have to decide what I believe to be most important when buying a grinder.

My Burr Grinder Buying Guide

With that, I developed my grinder buying guide, essentially a summary of all the factors I believe to be most important when looking for the best burr coffee grinder for you. The summary below is meant to simplify a process that can seem overwhelming and hopefully it provides the guidance you need to make an informed, happy decision. These factors also helped me select my favorite burr grinders within 3 different categories. The point of splitting my favorite picks into different categories means that there is an option for every buyer. Have a look at my favorite picks after reading through this next section, I promise it will be worth your while.

So, don’t be discouraged if you find yourself in the same position as I was back then. I believe that as long as these factors drive your decision, you”’ end up with one of the best burr coffee grinders out there!

Most Important Features
  • Price Point: Most people will have set a spending limit and this will be the main driver for the type and quality of grinder you buy. This is personal decision and after deciding this, you should have a look at the rest of the factors. It’s worth noting that even if your budget is relatively small, you can still get a really good grinder if you compromise on some other features – buying a manual grinder for instance.
  • Build Quality: Grinders are generally made from stainless steel, glass, wood and/or plastic. This is personal preference, just make sure that the grinder is of good quality. Plastic grinders most likely won’t last as long as look or good as stainless steel grinders but will be significantly cheaper and do a great job regardless.
  • Manual vs Electric: Manual grinders require a decent amount of elbow grease, especially when making coffee for a group. However they are a lot cheaper, more durable and portable. Manual grinders are a great way to get a mid-good grinder for a fraction of the price of an electric one of the same quality.
Some other things to keep in mind:
  • Conical vs Flat: Both flat and conical burr grinders will give you amazing consistent grinds. Each barista will have their own preference but this decision isn’t too important. As mentioned above, just make sure your burr grinder is of good quality and well maintained and you’ll be good to go.
  • Stainless steel vs Ceramic: Your burr grinder will come with either ceramic or stainless steel burrs. Ceramic burr grinders are more durable but more expensive. Most manual grinders and better quality electric grinders will come with ceramic burrs.
  • Grind settings: How easy is it to adjust the grinder and how many grind sizes can it produce? Ideally you’d want a grinder that is capable of grinding from extra course all the way to extra fine.
  • Aesthetic: As the grinder will most likely sit on your kitchen counter it won’t hurt to have one that you really enjoy looking at. Grinders come in all sorts of shapes and colors and you will no doubt have a preference. Just remember to always prioritize function over form!

And that’s it! Not as complicated as many people out there make it right. When browsing through product pages, start off by only selecting the grinders that fall within your price point – this will narrow your search down significantly. Then have a look at the build quality and whether you want an electric or manual grinder. If after this you still don’t have your perfect grinder, take your final picks through the other factors you should keep in mind (burr shape and material, grind settings and aesthetic – all discussed above) and we guarantee you’ll be left with the perfect grinder for you.

  1. I used to have a manual grinder but not a burr one. Since I am the only regular coffee drinker and only one per day at that, I didn’t mind grinding the beans.

Now I have an electric, bladed one. This is the first I have heard of the burred ones. But this method and benefits make perfect sense.

Looking at your recommendations I believe my next one will be Handground Precision Coffee Grinder. The timing depends on when my current one ‘retires’.

    Thanks for this information.

  6. Thomas, as an espresso bar owner, I am always looking for alternatives for my customers for their home brewing. I have always told my customers that the grinder is more important than the machine. A good quality grinder is essential in coffee preparation. Your reviews are fantastic but more importantly, I love that you are spreading the word on the benefits of conical burr grinders as I believe they are the only way to go.
As with all coffee equipment, cleaning is important. Is there any products that can be ground to help remove the oils that build up over time in the grinder?
Thanks for all the information. Regards, Matt

    1. Thanks for reading Matt, glad you enjoyed the article.

Luckily cleaning your grinder is fairly simple and quick, and definitely important. People often forget that over time your grinder collects oils and random coffee grounds and that this can affect the freshness and cleanliness of your grind. All one needs to do to clean their grinder is run coffee grinder cleaning tablets through you grinder (available on Amazon) once every month or so. This keeps things simple and easy.

If you want a much deeper clean, you’ll have to take your grinder apart and wipe the pieces down individually. However, please watch some YouTube videos on this so that you know what you’re getting yourself in for!

Let me know if you have any other questions!

      Thanks again,
      Thomas
